Presidential election

The election for the post of Vice President will be held on August 5. The Vice President is also the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. While the Opposition has fielded former diplomat Gopalkrishna Gandhi for the Vice President post, the NDA government has picked Venkaiah Naidu for the post.
Gopalkrishna is the grandson of Mahatma Ghandi. He is well educated and has a clean image in politics as well as in administration, but whenever I go through his profile and background two or three questions always get up
1.In 2015, why did he write a letter to the President of India, Dr. Pranab Mukherjee, to reconsider the rejection of the mercy plea of the 1993 Mumbai serial blast convict, Yakub Memon.
=>    Leaders of congress party and his supporters say that he follows the Mahatma Ghandi's ideology and that ideology doesn't allow us to give capital punishment to anyone (whether he is a terrorist)
Here again questions arise
2. Was Mahatma Gandhi really against the capital punishment?
If yes,
3.Then why didn't he file a mercy plea when our three sons punished capital punishment?
And if Gopalkrishan really care about the death penalty,
4.Then why  doesn't  he write a letter for a normal person ()?
5.Why doesn't he file a plea in the supreme court to remove this?
Imagine what happened to Yakub Memon, who's the responsible for 293 innocent people's deaths , if our president was Gopalkrishan instead of Pranab Mukherjee
